  • TA Instruments – Horizontal Dilatometers Brochure

Dilatometry measures the change in size of a sample as a function of temperature. In addition to directly determining the thermal expansion of the sample, the change in size also provides information about phase transitions and physical or chemical changes in the microstructure. These can be identified by the associated changes in density and rate of expansion of the material. Dilatometry is also an extremely useful method for evaluating the sintering behavior of materials, as it records both the shrinkage of a sintered sample and the temperatures required to achieve this change. This analysis allows optimization of workpiece shapes and processing temperatures, improvement of product quality and reduction of costs.

Key Features

Available Models

To maximize sample throughput, DIL 803 and DIL 803L offers two-samples simultaneous operation. DIL803 and DIL 803L can also be operated with an inert reference sample for quasi-differential measurement, reducing the influence of measurement system expansion and increasing measurement accuracy under dynamic temperature conditions. The DIL 803 is designed for measurements under vacuum or inert gas while the DIL 803L is designed for measurements under air, making the DIL 803L ideally suited to measuring ceramic materials.

For highest measurement accuracy, DIL 802 and DIL 802L provides a truly differential measurement. Measuring only the difference between the sample and the reference specimen with the same, single LVDT-sensor, the True Differential design negates the influence of measurement system expansion on the sample measurement. This measurement design is of particular benefit for dynamic temperature programs such as those employed in Rate-Controlled-Sintering (RCS) and for measurements of samples with small thermal expansion. The DIL 802 is designed for measurements under vacuum or inert gas while the DIL 802L is designed for measurements under air.

Suitable for a wide range of routine dilatometric tests, the DIL 801 and DIL 801L are horizontally configured single-sample dilatometers. The DIL 801 is designed for measurements under vacuum or inert gas while the DIL 801L is designed for measurements in air, making the DIL 801L ideally suited to measuring ceramic materials which are often processed in air.

An instrument offering scientists the ideal tool for R&D laboratories to measure the linear thermal expansion and to calculate the Coefficient of Thermal Expansion (CTE) of ceramics, glasses, high performance materials, polymers, metals and alloys with great accuracy.

Key Features

  • Linear motor for a sample load range of 0.01 to 1.00 N, with a force resolution of 0.01 N and linearity better than 0.01 N across the total measuring range of 5000 µm, to guarantee the correct sample load regardless of the material tested
  • Patented optical incremental encoder to bring length measurement resolution down to a best in class 1 nm, and to allow the measurement of shorter samples yet preserving an outstanding ∆L resolution. Its newly designed measuring head housing and the active electrical thermal stabilization ensure unprecedented stability of the detection core. This, combined with the unique design of TA Instruments furnaces, results in a zero temperature-gradient across the specimen and an industry leading CTE accuracy for single sample push rod dilatometers of 0.03 x 10-6 K-1
  • Automatic recording of the initial sample length
  • Water cooled furnaces providing a very dynamic temperature programming with a maximum heating rate of 50 K/min and industry unmatched cool down time of 13 minutes from 1000°C to room temperature. This is up to 15 times shorter than competitive instruments
  • Integrated electronics providing network connection, while the integrated touch screen allows you to perform many functions directly on the instrument and shows, in real time, measurement parameters and test’s time-to-completion

DIL 832 features an impressive array of unique technologies and capabilities that make of it the ideal tool in any R&D laboratory for the characterization of mechanical and dimensional properties: TA Instruments exclusive True Differentialâ„¢ technology, the patented 1 nm resolution optical encoder, a family of new dynamic furnaces, and the new linear sample load motor. The result is the best performing horizontal push-rod dilatometer available on the market, regardless of the application or the material to be tested.

The sample load is ensured by a linear motor with a range of 0.01 to 1.00 N, a force resolution of 0.01 N and a linearity better than 0.01 N across the total measuring range of 5000 µm.

The new patented optical incremental encoder brings length measurement’s true resolution down to a best in class 1 nm. This allows for the measurement of shorter samples yet preserving an outstanding ∆L resolution.

The newly designed measuring head housing and the active electrical thermal stabilization ensure unprecedented stability of the detection core. Combined with  TA Instruments exclusive True Differentialâ„¢ technology and the unique design of TA Instruments furnaces, results in the DIL 832 delivering an industry leading CTE accuracy of 0.01 x 10-6 K-1.
