The Spectro FieldLab 58 is a rugged, portable expeditionary fluid analysis system that gives operators in the field the ability to perform comprehensive, mobile lubricant sampling. The battery-powered device enables complete lubricant assessment for condition monitoring and rapid results that permit informed maintenance decisions. It takes only 3 ml of oil to perform a comprehensive oil analysis and no chemicals or solvents are needed for sample preparation or cleaning. The complete analysis, with all four tests, only takes about 5 – 7 minutes, depending on oil viscosity.

The Needs for Portable Field Labs

Downtime for mission critical equipment, such as high value military assets on the ground or in the air, are costly terms of dollar expense, mission completion and human lives. Oil analysis is one of the most important and reliable techniques to keep these assets up and running. However, logistics hurdles including oil sampling, bottling and transportation to labs, delay the on-time delivery of oil analysis and reduce the effectiveness of the oil analysis program.

Military and commercial field service professionals managing fleets of high value assets require portable light weight devices that provide rapid oil analysis results with similar quality as oil analysis labs.

Funded by the Unite States Department of Defense (DoD) in 2009 then developed and commercialized by Spectro Scientific, the FieldLab 58 Expeditionary Fluid Analysis System (EFAS) was designed to fill this need.

FluidScan is a handheld Infrared analyzer for lubricant and grease condition and contamination monitoring

The FluidScan® 1000 series handheld Infrared oil analyzer provides direct quantitative measurement of a lubricant’s condition and plays an important role in Machine Condition Monitoring  (MCM) for proactive and predictive maintenance in Reliability Management programs. It determines when oil needs to be serviced due to degradation of the oil chemistry or contamination by other fluids such as water or the wrong oil. It is compliant with ASTM D7889 “Standard Test Method for Field Determination of In-Service Fluid Properties Using IR Spectroscopyâ€.

The MiniVisc 3000 series (formerly the SpectroVisc Q3000 Series) viscometers are the first truly portable, solvent-free, temperature-controlled kinematic viscometers, providing high-accuracy measurements for easy detection of viscosity variations caused by contamination, mix-up and oil degradation. The devices were designed to determine kinematic viscosity at 40C in the field for applications where immediate results are essential for determining the health of critical equipment.

MiniVisc 3000 viscometers use a patented split cell design that enables measurement of kinematic viscosity using only a few drops (60µL) of oil. When closed, the center pieces of the split cell form a funnel with 100 micron gap allowing oil to flow down by gravity. Sensors along the funnel are triggered when oil flows by and flow time between two sensors is measured. The kinematic viscosity is then calculated. When opened, the split cell can be easily cleaned with a non-abrasive cleaning pad and ready for next sample. The split cell is controlled at 40C throughout the measurement.

The LaserNet 200 Series allows reliability professionals to quickly and easily assess machinery health in just minutes. By testing only a few milliliters of fluid, users see a complete picture of machine wear and particulate contamination. This enables the user to determine filtration efficiency, the type of wear mode occurring, and the change in ferrous debris concentration, for maintenance action.

With a simple push of a button, a comprehensive picture of machine wear is generated with only a few parameters:

    • Particle cleanliness codes, such as ISO 4406 and ASTM D6786, indicate the overall cleanliness of the oil
    • Ferrous Wear Severity Index (FWSI) indicates overall severity of the machine wear condition
    • Count of large cutting, sliding and fatigue wear, along with non-metallic particles, indicates the source of the particles

Having this information allows reliability professionals to make informed decisions on the maintenance of their critical assets.

Stilla® Crystal Digital PCR™ technology for absolute quantification of nucleic acids is based on cutting-edge microfluidic technology that integrates the digital PCR process in a single consumable, reducing the hands-on time and interaction, so users can simply insert the sample and walk away.

The sample is partitioned using a network of microchannels into a large array of individual droplets, also called a droplet crystal. Owing to the next-generation Crystal Digital PCR™ technology, the droplets partitioned are identical in size- yielding results you can trust. PCR then amplifies the fluorescent target in the droplets which can be read for absolute quantification the nucleic acids.

With a combination of powerful imaging, the flexibility to use up to 3 detection channels, and a proprietary software for analysis, Crystal Digital PCR™ is designed to offer an unmatched level of confidence in the digital PCR measurement.

    The Naica® System

Get absolute quantification of multiple genetic targets in a single run

Digital PCR (dPCR) is a powerful tool used for the precise and highly sensitive quantification of nucleic acids.

The naica® system is an easy-to-use dPCR platform that harnesses cutting-edge microfluidic technology to integrate the dPCR workflow onto a single consumable chip. The technology, known as Crystal Digital PCR™, partitions samples into a large array of thousands of individual droplet crystals – each its own reaction compartment – before amplifying nucleic acid molecules in each droplet crystal. These reactions are tagged with fluorophores to be read using up to six different fluorescence light channels.

This makes for a fast and simple workflow that provides even more sensitivity while reducing time to results and saving precious sample.

Prism – Residual stress measurement based on hole-drilling and ESPI Prism is an advanced hole-drilling system that dramatically improves the ability to make quick and accurate residual stress measurements. Just like the conventional strain gage hole-drilling systems, the instrument measures changes in the part surface caused by the hole drilling and determines the previously existing residual stresses. However, the often time-consuming application of strain gages is avoided and a large area around the hole is analyzed, not averages from just a few areas. Prism measures surface distortion using electronic speckle pattern interferometry (ESPI). Only minimal sample preparation is required. The update of the coefficient data set in 2015 has significantly improved the quality of the stress results. This also increases the relative depth from which reasonable results can be expected.

Residual stress and retained austenite measurements with Xstress Xstress Robot system consists of a robot goniometer with G3 tube holder attached conveniently to an easily movable carrier, X3003 main unit and XTronic software. Robot goniometer now handles the tasks previously made possible by an X-Y system and Floor stand. Xstress Robot includes everything needed for making residual stress or retained austenite measurements by X-ray diffraction. It is especially useful for making measurements on large and complicated parts or surfaces that cannot be moved easily otherwise. Instead of moving the location to be measured, the Xstress Robot system moves onto the measurement location with minimum efforts. Mapping within the robot’s reach is handled with the XTronic software, and when a measurement needs to be made further away, the whole Xstress Robot system can be moved to the new position.

The latest addition to the DVS family, DVS Carbon, is the first purpose-built gravimetric sorption analyzer for advanced carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) applications. In most gas phase carbon capture applications, CO2 often competes with other chemical species at adsorbent sites, including water vapor. The new DVS Carbon enables the measurement of CO2 uptake in real life conditions, controlling both temperature and humidity at a broad range of CO2 concentrations.

With the patented Surface Measurement Systems Ultrabalance measuring real-time mass changes caused by sorption and desorption in the sample, complex carbon capture conditions can be assessed in a range of materials. In addition, the system can be configured to enable a range of different capabilities.
